What this bill does
In plain words · AI-written from the official summaryEstablishes space infrastructure as critical sector
This bill tells the Department of Homeland Security to officially recognize space systems, services, and technology as a critical part of U.S. infrastructure, similar to how power grids or water systems are protected. DHS would then create guidance that defines what counts as space infrastructure and picks a federal agency to coordinate activities and protect this sector. The bill also makes sure space infrastructure gets considered when national security grants are handed out.
How it affects you
Most people won't see direct changes in their daily lives, but this designation means the government will focus more attention and resources on protecting the space systems that many Americans depend on, like GPS, weather forecasting, and communications. If you use any service that relies on satellites, this bill aims to keep those services safer and more resilient against threats.

Space Infrastructure Act
This bill directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to designate space systems, services, and technology as a critical infrastructure sector. Under current law, critical infrastructure means systems and assets, whether physical or virtual, so vital to the United States that the incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of those matters.
DHS must issue guidance with respect to the designation, in which it must define the scope of the sector and name a federal agency to serve as the federal interface for the prioritization and coordination of activities specific to the sector, among other duties.
The bill also adds the space systems, services, and technology sector to a list of critical infrastructure sectors that DHS must consider in allocating certain national security grants.
