What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Tightens identification rules for Medicare providers

The bill makes it easier for Medicare to track and identify fraud. It requires Medicare to deactivate ID numbers for healthcare providers who've been kicked out of federal programs for fraud or abuse. It also requires insurance plans to include provider ID numbers when they submit certain healthcare claims and asks telehealth companies to flag their claims with a special marker so Medicare can monitor them better.

How it affects you

If you use Medicare, this could help protect you by making it harder for fraudsters to bill the program and potentially keeping your costs down. Healthcare providers and telehealth companies will need to follow new identification and claims procedures, but most people won't notice a direct change in their care.

Medicare Fraud Detection and Deterrence Act of 2025

This bill requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to deactivate the standard unique health identifiers of health care providers that are excluded from federal health care programs because of fraud, waste, or abuse.

The bill also requires (1) any data submitted by Medicare Advantage plans with respect to durable medical equipment, prosthetics or orthotics, laboratory tests, imaging tests, or home health services to include the standard unique health identifier of the associated provider or supplier; and (2) health care practitioners who are employed by or contract with telehealth companies to use a specialized claims modifier (developed by CMS) for Medicare telehealth services.
