What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Keeps border agents paid during shutdown

When the federal government runs out of money and shuts down, most agencies stop operations until Congress passes new funding. This bill says that certain U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and agents at the southern, northern, and maritime borders would keep getting paid during a shutdown, as would Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who handle immigration enforcement and criminal investigations.

How it affects you

If you work as a CBP or ICE officer or agent in these roles, you'd continue receiving your paycheck even if the government shuts down. For the general public, it means certain border security and immigration enforcement operations would continue during a shutdown rather than pause.

Homeland Heroes Pay Act

This bill provides continuing appropriations for the salaries and expenses of certain U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and agents during any lapse in appropriations (i.e., government shutdown).

If a lapse in appropriations occurs, the bill provides continuing appropriations for the salaries and expenses of (1) CBP officers and agents who are performing mission critical functions at U.S. southwest, northern, and maritime border ports of entry, and between such ports of entry; and (2) ICE officers and agents who conduct immigration enforcement and investigations of criminal operations and organizations.
