What this bill does
In plain words · AI-written from the official summaryCounseling for families of suicide veterans
This bill requires the VA to offer free counseling to the families and former caregivers of veterans who die by suicide. The VA can partner with government agencies, states, or private organizations to provide these services, as long as they're easy to access and at least as good as other VA counseling. The VA would also have to share information about the program online and directly with people who qualify.
How it affects you
If you're a family member or former caregiver of a veteran who died by suicide, you would be eligible for free counseling services through the VA. This gives you access to professional support during what can be an incredibly difficult time, without the cost or burden of finding services on your own.

Green Star Families Act
This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to furnish free counseling services to the next of kin and former volunteer caregivers of veterans who die by suicide. (Generally, Green Star families are families of servicemembers and veterans who have died by suicide.)
The VA may provide counseling services under this bill only if the services are reasonably accessible to the eligible individuals and are substantially equivalent or superior to similar services furnished by the VA to such individuals.
The VA is authorized to enter into an agreement with a federal, state, or private entity to provide the counseling services.
Additionally, the VA must publish information relating to the program online and provide information relating to the program to any eligible individual.
