What this bill does
In plain words · AI-written from the official summaryLimits deceptive AI media in elections
This bill would ban people and organizations from spreading AI-generated audio or video that is materially deceptive—meaning it's fake in a way that matters—about federal candidates or during federal elections. The goal is to stop this content when it's used to influence elections or raise money. News stations that broadcast such material with clear disclosure would be allowed to do so. The bill also gives candidates the right to sue if their voice or likeness appears in this kind of deceptive AI content.
How it affects you
If you're a federal candidate, you'd gain the legal ability to take action against deceptive AI media using your image or voice. Voters and donors would theoretically encounter fewer pieces of manipulated content designed to mislead them about candidates. The rule wouldn't affect news organizations' ability to report on this kind of content as long as they clearly identify it as deceptive AI media.

Protect Elections from Deceptive AI Act
This bill prohibits the distribution of materially deceptive audio or visual media that is generated by artificial intelligence (AI) relating to federal candidates.
The bill generally prohibits individuals, political committees, and other entities from knowingly distributing materially deceptive AI-generated audio or visual media in carrying out a federal election activity or of a federal candidate for the purpose of (1) influencing an election, or (2) soliciting funds. This prohibition does not apply to certain entities, such as radio or television broadcasting stations that broadcast such media with disclosures as part of a bona fide newscast.
The bill also permits a federal candidate whose voice or likeness appears in such materially deceptive AI-generated audio or visual media to bring a civil action for injunctive relief or damages.
