What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Schools must train staff on food allergies

School cafeteria workers already get yearly training on nutrition and food safety. This bill adds a new requirement: they'd also have to complete training on food allergies. The training would cover how to prevent allergic reactions, spot the signs of one happening, and respond properly. Workers would need to show they actually understand the material.

How it affects you

If you have a child with food allergies, this means the people handling their lunch at school would be better prepared to keep them safe. Cafeteria workers would learn best practices for preventing mix-ups and know how to react if a child has an allergic reaction.

Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act of 2025

This bill requires that local school food service personnel receive annual training and certification on food allergies as part of the training provided by the National School Lunch Program of the Department of Agriculture.

Under current law, the mandatory training and certification for school food service personnel must include modules on (1) nutrition, and (2) health and food safety standards and methodologies.

Under the bill, the training and certification must also include a module on food allergies, including information on the best practices to prevent, recognize, and respond to food-related allergic reactions.

As part of the certification, the bill also requires that food service personnel demonstrate competence in the training provided.
