What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Assault on police becomes deportable offense

The bill makes it so that non-U.S. citizens who are convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or other first responder can be deported. The Department of Homeland Security would also have to publish a yearly report showing how many people were deported under this rule.

How it affects you

If you're a non-U.S. citizen, an assault conviction against police, firefighters, or first responders could lead to deportation. For law enforcement and first responders themselves, this creates an additional legal consequence for people who assault them. Most other Americans won't directly experience this change unless they work in law enforcement or emergency services.

This bill makes assaulting a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or other first responder a deportable offense.

Specifically, the bill makes deportable any non-U.S. national ( alien under federal law) who has been convicted of (or admits to have committed) any act that constitutes the essential elements of any offense involving assault of a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or other first responder.

The Department of Homeland Security must publish annually on its website a report on the number of individuals deported in the previous fiscal year pursuant to this bill.
