What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Creates network to study biochar in soil

The bill tells the Agricultural Research Service to set up a biochar research network with up to 20 research sites. These sites would test how biochar—a material made by heating wood, grass, and manure with very little oxygen—affects soil across different types of land, climates, and application methods. The goal is to understand whether biochar can help agriculture, forestry, and the environment, particularly by storing carbon and improving how soil works.

How it affects you

This bill doesn't directly change things for most people. It funds research to test whether biochar could be useful for farmers and forest managers down the road. If the research shows biochar works well, it might eventually lead to new practices that help agricultural and forestry operations, but this bill is focused on gathering information first.

Biochar Research Network Act of 2025

This bill directs the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to establish a biochar research network of not more than 20 research sites or facilities to test the impact of biochar across various soil types, application methods, and climates to learn more about its potential to benefit agriculture, forestry, and the environment.

Eligible entities for the research network include (1) state agriculture and forestry experiment stations; and (2) research facilities of the ARS, the Forest Service, and the Departments of Energy, Commerce, and the Interior.

Biochar is created by heating biomass (e.g., wood, grass, and manure) in a low-oxygen environment and can be applied to soil to sequester carbon and improve soil health.
