What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Expands tax deduction for early childhood educators

Right now, teachers in kindergarten through grade 12 can deduct certain classroom and professional development expenses from their federal taxes, up to $300 a year. This bill extends that same tax deduction to early childhood educators—those who teach preschool and pre-kindergarten. They'd be able to deduct the same kinds of expenses and amounts as other teachers already can.

How it affects you

Early childhood educators would directly benefit by being able to reduce their taxable income, just like K-12 teachers do now. If you're an early childhood educator paying for classroom supplies or professional training out of your own pocket, this change could lower your federal tax bill.

Supporting Early-childhood Educators' Deductions Act or the SEED Act

This bill expands eligibility for the above-the-line federal tax deduction for certain eligible educator expenses to include early childhood educators. (An above-the-line tax deduction is subtracted from gross income to calculate adjusted gross income.)

Under current law, kindergarten through grade 12 teachers, instructors, counselors, principals, or aides in schools that provide elementary or secondary education are allowed an above-the-line tax deduction of up to $300 (in 2025 and adjusted annually) for certain unreimbursed professional development and classroom expenses. (Other conditions apply.)

The bill expands eligibility for the tax deduction for such educator expenses to include early childhood educators in schools that provide early childhood (pre-kindergarten) education.
