What this bill does
In plain words · AI-written from the official summaryDirects USDA to create bird flu vaccine plan
The bill asks the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop a strategy for vaccinating chickens and turkeys against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), the most serious form of bird flu. The department must work with trade officials to make sure any vaccination approach follows World Trade Organization rules, since other countries may have concerns about importing poultry from the U.S.
How it affects you
This primarily affects poultry farmers and producers. Right now, the U.S. doesn't use vaccines to combat bird flu in flocks, so having a formal vaccination strategy could offer farmers a new tool to protect their birds and their livelihoods during outbreaks. Consumers might also benefit indirectly if vaccination helps keep poultry supply more stable and prices steadier.

Avian Flu Vaccination Strategy Act
This bill directs the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to develop and finalize a poultry vaccination strategy to address highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Specifically, USDA, in consultation with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, must develop an HPAI vaccination strategy that complies with World Trade Organization rules.
Avian influenza (i.e., bird flu) is a contagious viral disease of domesticated and wild birds. Depending on the viral strain, the disease can cause little to no signs of illness (referred to as low pathogenic avian influenza) or it can cause a range of symptoms from serious illness to death (referred to as highly pathogenic avian influenza , or HPAI).
