What this bill does

In plain words · AI-written from the official summary

Sets defense policies and military budgets for 2027

This bill is the annual defense policy and spending plan for the Department of Defense and Department of Energy's national security programs. It authorizes spending on military equipment like aircraft and ships, sets the number of active duty and reserve military personnel, establishes policies for military health care and pay, and covers everything from how the military buys equipment to how it handles cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. The bill also addresses international military matters, critical materials needed for defense, and military construction projects.

How it affects you

If you're in the military, this bill affects your pay, health care benefits, and personnel levels in your branch. If you work in defense manufacturing or supply critical materials like rare minerals, this bill shapes what the military can buy and from where. For most Americans, this is the backbone of annual defense spending, though the summary doesn't detail specific effects on civilians outside the military and defense sectors.
